Author Spotlight: N.A. Foy

Name:
N. A. Foy.

Tell us a little about yourself:
I am a writer and musician. I was first introduced to high fantasy when I was 16 and began reading the Dragonlance Chronicles. As a writer, I started off as more of a mystery/thriller writer with both supernatural and science fiction elements and eventually shifted to fantasy. All my novels to date can be categorized as speculative fiction. I currently keep 3 blogs, one for speculative fiction, one for non-fiction, and one for political satire. I play guitar and love metal.

What authors do you draw inspiration from and why:
Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis play a major role when it comes to my fantasy writings. I find that they are excellent at creating worlds and have very solid characters. J. R. R. Tolkien is another, as he was one of the original ones to create a fictional complex fantasy world. I have drawn from Dan Brown when it comes to the mystery/suspense aspects of writing, although my writings always have a supernatural element of some sort.

Tell us about your book:
My latest book is the first book in a Young Adult fantasy series I’m working on. It starts off in a once peaceful village where its citizens seem to slowly turned against each other. A curse is suspected, so the two main characters, Matthias and Xandria, are sent on a quest to capture a witch that is suspected of causing the curse. They are both elves and elves are immune to magic, so the village believes they have the best chance of fulfilling the quest. They begin their quest by entering a dead forest full of shadow thieves who seek to steal their soul. They must avoid their shadows from being seen. While walking through the forest, they are captured by a tribe of their ancient enemy known as frolm. The frolm refuse to let them be on their way but make a deal that if they can find a magical item to drive away the shadow thieves, they will release them. They make their way to a vortex which leads them to a bizarre world with many challenges that they must face.

How long did it take you to write it?  What were some of the challenges?
I did most of the writing from 2013-2017. The biggest challenge was whether to make this a children’s book series or a young adult series. At first, I was aiming to make it into a children’s book, but then I realized that the story was more fitting for young adults. I had to change the age of the elves from 13 and 14 to 17 and 18 to make it more fitting.

What is a unique or interesting bit of lore or background detail about your world:
I used elements from Celtic mythology even though I invented the world myself. Celtic deities such as Brigid, Aine, Morrigan, and others appear. One of the main characters, Matthias, went to bard school and he tells stories based on Celtic mythology.

What do you enjoy developing the most – characters, plot, or your world – and why:
That’s a tough question because I like all three. I would have to go with world creation though. There are just so many things you can create in a fantasy world from landscapes, to traditions, to the laws of magic, and so on. It pushes my creativity as far as I can go. There are no limitations when it comes to creating a fantasy world.

What’s your next project:
I have a few projects I’m currently working on. I’m working on the 2nd book for the Elements Pentalogy. There are three other projects I go back and forth on. One is a paranormal/low fantasy which connects our world with Zalonia. This series involves various supernatural creatures from various folklores. Another project is based on this group of people who were in an explosion, but instead of dying, they were transferred to this strange land where they seek to figure out where they are and why they are there. The other is called Earth’s End Chronicles where these mysterious murders keep happening in this small village and some teenagers are trying to unfold the mystery, but they run into something much bigger that involves deities, shapeshifters, and other strange happenings.

Beneath a Brass Sky Spotlight: Caravansaries

In  Beneath a Brass Sky , near the edge of the Brasslands, Ulfric and the wayfarers seek shelter in a holdover - a caravansary. There, they meet a guide that promises to see them over the Splitspines. To me, reaching the caravansary is an important moment in the story, because it represents Ulfric triumphing over the harshness of the Brasslands. Up to this point, arguably, the antagonist is the environment itself. But that's another post. Today, I want to talk about caravansaries. A caravansary is a roadside inn where travelers (caravaners) could rest and recover from a journey. They supported the flow of both commerce and information across the trade routes the sprawled across Asia, MENA, and SE Europe - especially the Silk Road, according to Wikipedia . When you arrive, expect to find markets, and farriers or smiths, and alehouses and cookshops, and perhaps gambling dens and other means of separating a traveler from their coins.  In short, Caravansaries were the fortified roads

Beneath a Brass Sky, Cover Evolution - 3

In this revision to the cover of Beneath a Brass Sky, Michal (@kvacm - twitter) began to add color and more detail. I love the dust storm (maybe the outer bands of a wilding?) swirling around the sandstone sentinel. All through the scene is a feeling of grit, and suffering, and dread. And yet, Ulfric and Spero are drawn ever east, and the remainder of the Wayfarers with them. What lies beyond that distant peak? A hollow country, no doubt. One that swallows men up.

Beneath a Brass Sky (Fantasy Fiction) - Is Out!

Beneath a Brass Sky (BaBS), my new fantasy novel, is now on Amazon for 99 cents! Link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08LZQJNCC/ First, the Blurb: Ulfric Halehorn is a sellsword that believes in the sanctity of the contract. He’s also rekindled an old grudge, incited a riot, and landed himself in jail on enough counts to see himself hung twice. In the midst of this, he somehow managed to win a lucrative contract to transport a mysterious crate across the Brasslands to Kush.  He’d be better off if he hadn’t. Days into the journey, Ulfric learns that the job is more than it seems, and that he carries with him the spark that may touch off a revolution that could burn across a city, and perhaps an entire region. Knowing this, Ulfric sees a chance to atone for breaking another contract nearly a decade ago — one that cost another city its freedom and its people their lives; an act that still haunts him to this day. But the Brasslands is a vast land, filled with fugitives, and wild beasts, and na
